Establishing an Organization's

Standard Process (OSP1.1) - Lesson Plan

Session 1

Module 1: This module covers Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI®) Maturity level 3 Process Areas (PAs) of Organizational Process Focus and Organizational Process Definition. A review of the key practicesfor these areas is provided. Critical to your company is a focus on the establishment of personnel responsible for the organization's defined process and the definition of the organization's process.

Module 2: The Policies and Procedures that make up the organization's defined process are discussed. The elements of and implementation of a compliant Policy document are covered. Similarly, the organization's Procedures for development are discussed including both essential and supporting procedures.

Session 2

Module 3: The PA entitled Integrated Project Management (IPM) contains the requirements for a project to tailor the organization's standard process; and that the project is planned and managed according to that tailored process. Key to this discussion is the tailoring mechanisms that a company may use to incorporate the standard process on a project. Here is where the rubber meets the road for the manager and developers.

Module 4: An exercise to create a Policy document in this module applies the prior module's training in a practical manner. Each group will have a section of the Policy document to produce and time will be left for the other groups to critique the other sections.

Session 3

Module 5: The structure, activities and size of Engineering Process Groups (EPGs) for both large organizations and small projects are covered. What are the specific requirements for an EPG and what are the activities that are appropriate and valuable are also discussed. The skills and experience required for an effective EPG are discussed. Return of investment for a defined process is presented from a practical viewpoint with industry examples.

Module 6: This module consist of an exercise on EPG structure and activities with an Action Plan. When a Class C or Class B appraisal or evaluation is performed on an organization, the response is most often to produce an Action Plan. A hypothetical evaluation result will be provided to the class, which is divided into EPGs (class groups). Each EPG will produce the outline of the Action Plan for resolution of the deficiencies uncovered by the theoretical evaluation.

Session 4

Module 7: An EPG cannot function adequately without senior management buy-in and ownership. How to achieve the management buy-in and institutionalization is the focus of this module. Topics, such as, return on investment, RFP response, and proposal justification, are discussed. In order to institutionalize the standard software process, the organization's projects need to be informed. This requires training and transitioning. How training and transitioning may best be implemented in your organization is covered.

Module 8: This module uses an interactive discussion to compare your organization's status against CMMI® Maturity Level 3. A checklist of the fundamental elements is used.
