Getting Ready for Appraisal (GRA1.1) - Lesson Plan

CMMI-DEV v1.2

Session 1

Module 1: A Standard CMMI ® Appraisal Method for Process Improvement (SCAMPI SM ) is defined.  The structure of the SCAMPI SM is covered.  Also, the team make-up for the SCAMPI SM is covered.  When is it necessary and how can your company save money by doing more internal or reduced forms of evaluations is presented.

Module 2: Split session: (1) Opportunity is provided to review all the Proejct Manager questions for appropriate personnel.  These questions must be related to your company's environment, so each set of questions will be reviewed with the attendees to ensure that your company's real situation is covered.  (2) Concepts related to Functional Area Representatives (FARs) are given and help is provided to your company in appropriate identification of the right FARs for your SCAMPI SM and their roles.  What the FARs should do to act as a coordinated team during the appraisal is presented.  What the appraiser is trying to discover when interviewing the FARs is discussed.

Session 2

Module 3: This module covers exploratory questions for CMMI® Maturity level 2 PAs ( process areas) of Requirements Management (RM), Project Planning SPP) and Project Monitoring and Control (PMC) and Measurement & Analysis (MA).  In this module generic questions will be asked of the entire group and feedback immediately provided on appropriate responses and key elements.  This gives the group a sense of how to phrase responses in a winning fashion.

Module 4: This module covers CMMI® Maturity level 2 PAs of Supplier Agreement Management (SAM), Process and Product Quality Assurance (PPQA) and Configuration Management (CM).  For this exercise the attendees will be separated into groups for direct interaction and focus on responses applicable to your company.  The teams will provide feedback to individual members regarding their responses.

Session 3

Module 5: This module extends the CMMI® Maturity Level 2 discussion to Maturity Level 3.  The role of the Software Engineering Process Group (SEPG) is discussed in this module.  Also, covered is the important preparation role the SEPG plays in assessments.  The impacts of the transition to CMMI® Maturity Level 3 are addressed with a review of  the responses that were covered for CMMI® Maturity level 2 now that there is an organization standard process.  Also covered in this module is the motivation of the assessor / evaluator and why that understanding will help your company to perform better in an evaluation / assessment.

Module 6: Exploratory questions related to CMM level 3 KPAs of Organizational Process Focus and Organizational Process Definition (OPF&OPDD) and Integrated Project Management (IPM) are covered in this module.  The presentation method will be with separate teams providing the "best" answers for your company.

Session 4

Module 7: This module covers the exploratory questions and responses related to CMMI® Maturity Level 3 PAs of Requirements Development (RD), Technical Solution (TS), Product Integration (PI), Verification (VER), Validation (VAL), and Decision Analysis and Resolution (DAR).  The attendees are ready at this stage to go through a mock appraisal where the structure of the class will be set up to simulate a real SCAMPI SM.

Module 8: The exploratory questions surrounding the CMMI® Maturity Level 3 PAs of Risk Management (RSKM) and Organizational Training (OT) are covered.  Not meeting the training requirements of the CMMI® is a frequent reason for companies not to achieve CMMI® Maturity Level 3.  Therefore, framing responses to this area is given critical focus to assure that the organizational and project integration is properly addressed .
